Virginia Jo Townsend was born on June 14, 1927, to Johnnie and Lattie Mai Rose. She grew up in Newbern, Tennessee, and went to Freed Hardeman Junior College and Memphis State University. Her first career was as a bank teller in a branch of Union Planters Bank located in the old Kennedy Veterans Hospital on Getwell. Her second career was as an elementary school librarian for Memphis City Schools at Pine Hill, Bruce, Peabody, and Springdale Elementary Schools. She is survived by sister Joyce Hulme and her husband Benson Hulme, sister Doris Sims, and brother Billy Rose and his wife Martha. Her husband Perry Townsend died in 2006. They are survived by daughter Jan Rogers and her husband Dennis and their three children and six grandchildren, and by son John Townsend and his wife Mariona and their five children, 12 grand children, and one great grandchild. She was a member of Park Avenue Church of Christ. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Park Avenue, or a cause special to you would be appreciated. Visitation will be 12 p.m. Tuesday, August 15 until service begins at 2 p.m. at High Point Funeral Home Chapel.
