Statesman, Prime Minister of Portugal. He served on three different occasions. First, from 24 September 1834 to 4 May 1835. Second, from 7 February 1842 to 9 February 1842 and lastly from 20 May 1846 to 6 October 1846. He also served as 6th Minister of War of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves from 1820 to 1821. Prior to his service as prime minister he was Portuguese plenipotentiary to the Congress of Vienna in 1814 and for a short time ambassador to London. He also served as ambassador in Copenhagen, Berlin, Rome, and Madrid. He was then secretary of state for foreign affairs in Brazil. He returned to Portugal with King John VI in 1821 and was created a marquês in 1823. He then occupied several offices including prime minister. He is best remembered for the movement that put Maria II on the throne in 1834 and it was largely thanks to his subsequent efforts that she remained queen. He was named Duque de Palmela in 1833 and was active in politics and diplomacy until his death.
