Betty Jo Clary Powell, 83, of Monroe, passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at her residence. She was the loving wife of Johnny James Powell for sixty-three years. Born on January 1, 1934, in Winter Haven, Fla., she was the daughter of the late Roy Elmer Clary and Pearl Varner Clary. Betty retired from General Telephone & Electric Corp in 1985 after 31 years and the Amherst County Parks and Recreation as a senior coordinator in 2014. In addition to her love for working with the seniors of Amherst County she enjoyed baking and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Lynchburg Church of God of Prophecy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Roy E. Clary Jr. In addition to her husband, Johnny, she is survived by her daughter, Michelle Maynard and husband, David; her two sons, J. Michael Powell and wife, Sharon, and J. Philip Jones and wife, Wanda; ten grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; her brother, the Rev. Charles Clary and wife, Bertha; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at Whitten Monelison Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Pastor Charles Clary officiating. Interment will follow in Allwood Cemetery.
