Prime Minister of Portugal. He served from November 26, 1839 to June 9,1841. Prior to becoming prime minister, he was to enter a career with the Catholic Church but Napolean's invasion of Portugal caused him to become a resistance fighter during the occupation. A member of the Portuguese army, he initially served as as a Portuguese aide-de-camp to the Duke of Wellington in battles with the French. He rose to become a Major Assistant in the General Staff of the Portuguese army and was decorated at the battles of Albuera in 1811, Salamanca in 1812 and Toulouse in 1814. He was made Captain General (governor) of Madeira and Porto Santo in 1827. On September 17, 1835 he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Bonfim and later Count Bonafim. On September 9,1837 he was appointed Minister of War, interim Foreign Minister and Minister of Marine. He was a senator in the legislature of 1839–40 and became prime minister in 1839. He is best remembered for his military prowess and bringing a period of calm and stability to the country. Later, during a civil war, he was exiled. He returned in 1847. In 1851 he was appointed head of the Supreme Council of Military Justice and on his death was accorded a state funeral.
