Carl O. Magee, 60, Dies; Well-Known Stockman, Farmer, Former Coach

Carl O. Magee, 60, prominent local landowner, farmer and Hereford stockman, died at his farm home, five miles north of Albany, at about 9:30 Saturday night. His death was due to heart trouble.

Mr. Magee had been a patient in the Gentry County Memorial hospital at two different times this summer. On each occasion he was a patient at the hospital for about two and one-half weeks. He was returned to his home last Thursday.

For 25 years, Mr. Magee had been in the Hereford cattle business. He had dealt with registered and commercial Polled Herefords and had established a reputation for his fine herd. His family, his cattle and football were characteristics of his life.

His interest in football came as the result of his school coaching career at Albany High school. He was a history and economics teacher at the school here for six or seven years and also coached the Albany High Warriors. In the year 1933 he had a championship team and all of his teams were outstanding ones.

One summer, Mr. Magee went to St. Paul, Minn., where he took a course in football under the famed Bernie Bierman, University of Minnesota coach.

Born the son of Frank and Carrie Monger Magee on the Magee farm home, which he owned at the time of his death, on March 14, 1901, Mr. Magee was graduated from the Albany High school, attended Palmer College for two years, then stayed out of school for a year or two to be employed in the Bank of Albany.

He later resumed his schooling, attending William Jewell College at Liberty, Mo., where he received his degree. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha social fraternity there. Following his graduation from William Jewell, Mr. Magee taught for one year in the in the Liberty school system, then returned to Albany, where he had a highly successful teaching career.

He gave up the teaching profession to take care of the Magee farming interests and that was when he became interested in cattle. Over the quarter of a century he became highly successful in that field.

He and Miss Martha Whaley were united in marriage on Aug. 10, 1930. Two daughters were born to that union. They are Mrs. Dewey Fitch of Peoria, Ill., and Mrs. Harold Miller of Skokie, Ill.

Besides the widow and the two daughters, he is survived by two sons-in-law and by five grandchildren. They are Anne, Catherine and Sara Fitch and Sue and Charles Miller. There are other relatives and a wide circle of friends.

Mr. Magee was a member of the Albany Christian church and of the Masonic Lodge. He had been a member of the board of directors of the Albany Telephone Co., and was until the company was sold.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday from the Brooks-Cochell Funeral Home with the service conducted by the Rev. George W. Manning and the Rev. David Seward. In his memorial service, Rev. Manning Manning paid a warm tribute to Mr. Magee. Interment was in the Grandview cemetery (sic).
