Matthew was educated in Richmond Public Schools and attended Virginia State University and Virginia Union University.
Matthew left college to join the military and he was in The United States Army for 30 years.
Matthew was a faithful member of The Saint Paul's Baptist Church and he served faithfully on the Bereavement Committees.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Mrs. Wilhelmina K. Allen; his son, Matthew E. Allen, III and his wife, Angela; one daughter, Phyllis Allen Logan and her two sons, Samuel Alston of Atlanta, Georgia and Phillip Alston of Richmond. Matthew has grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will miss him.
