Some say his mdidle name is Simpson however all records I have found only show his middle initial of "S" except the 1910 federal census which has his name as Tom Samuel Gillespie. Thomas S. Gillespie and Eva Giles were married February 14, 1892 at John Newman's residence in Gentry County, Missouri, by C.E. Hayes. They had one son, Carl. Tom died of tuberculosis and was buried November 21, 1927 in Grandview East Cemetery.

NOTE: Headstone only shows birthyear of 1863. His death certificate states he was born March 16, 1863 while the 1900 federal census says he was born Nov 1863.

Some of Thomas' info originally contributed to this memorial by Walter Gillespie.

" Thomas S. Gillespie, well known and lifelong Gentry County citizen, died at his home on West Wood Street in Albany at two o'clock last Saturday morning, after an illness of several months.
The nature of his disease was never satisfactorily determined. During the most of his life he had been in excellent health, and all who knew him knew he possessed a strong, vigorous constitution. He was a man of temperate habits and his outdoor life gave him a well developed constitution. Early last spring he began to fail in health, and after the usual doctoring failed to bring relief, he put himself under physicians' care. But failing to find relief, he went to the Mayo Doctors Clinic at Rochester, MN and was under their examination for two weeks. They failed to find the seat of his trouble, and he returned home. From his arrival home until the time of his death he appeared at times to show some improvement, but the vicious disease, (whatever it was) had marked him for a victim and he succumbed last Saturday morning. During the months of his sickness he suffered intensely, but bore his pain with fortitude.
Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. W. Mays. Hundreds of relatives and friends gathered to pay their last respects to his memory, every section of the county being represented, as well as adjoining counties. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. Burial was at Grandview.
Until the unknown disease struck him less than a year ago, Mr. Gillespie was a man of the vigor of a matured manhood. He was a man of rather wide local interests and activities and his activity kept him in good physical condition.
Mr. Gillespie was born on a farm near Albany November 2, 1863, his age at death being 64 years and 17 days. He was the son of Floyd J. (sic) and Mary Thompson Gillespie, both well known among the earlier residents, and members of two well known pioneer families. February 14, 1892 he married Miss Eva Lee Giles. To them one son, Carl, was born, and who with his wife and mother bestowed all the care and affection possible upon him during his illness. He was one of six children of whom, John, died a good many years ago. The others are Mrs. George S. Hankins, James H. Gillespie and Mrs. Cora Shull all of Albany and George A. Gillespie of Jerome, Idaho.
Mr. Gillespie was a man of sterling character and was a high type citizen. During his lifelong residence here he stood for the best things for the community. He became a Christian during his early life and aligned himself with the church and at the time of his death he was a deacon of the Presbyterian Church and teacher of the men's bible class of the Sunday school.
He was one of the prosperous farmers of the county, owning about 400 acres of good land in this township. A number of years ago he moved from the farm to Albany, and his interest in the Gentry County Mutual Fire Insurance Company secured for him a place on the board and later Secretary and Treasurer, which position he held at the time of his death. He was a life-long Democrat and always took an interest in his party and its candidates.
He was a man who could ill be spared from the community, but death apparently plays no favorite.
