Stephen was the husband of Kathleen A. Emery of Leesville Louisiana, the son of Edgar R. and Ruth R. Emery; the dear brother of Richard and Christine all of Winchester Massachusetts. He was commissioned as a 2dLt in the US Army and arrived for duty in Vietnam where he was assigned to and served with C Company, 2d Battalion, 1st Infantry, 196th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, USARV.

On May 4, 1970 while enroute to a night defensive position several kilometers south and southwest of Hiep Duc in Quang Tin Province the men received several rounds of incoming enemy sniper fire. 1stLt Emery was wounded and transported to a medical facility were he died shortly upon arrival from the injury he sustained.
