from his father William J memorial the 1880 Census, William and his wife Mehitable (maiden name Slate) are living in dwelling 343, Essex CT. He is a farmer. Their two sons, William & Sylvester ages 34 & 27 are living with them.

He served in Company C 26th regiment CT volunteers and is listed as a corporal, interestingly he was in the same company as his brother Dexter as well as his brother in law Merritt Augustus Comstock who is listed as a 2nd lieutenant and was married to the elder sister of both brothers, Sarah Jane Lord.
