Nathaniel Wayne was born in Virginia per The History of Edgar Co., IL - Says "Nathaniel Wayne was originally from Richmond VA., where he learned the trade of A Shoemaker." His birth year has been estimated about 1778 or 1779 as records in Madison Co., Kentucky has him under 21 years of age on the 1799 Tax List and over 21 years of age on the 1800 Tax List.

On a 23 Jan 1800 marriage record in Madison Co., KY shows that Nathaniel married Ester Lewis, a daughter of Abraham Lewis. To this union their were 4 children known to have been born, William b. 1802, Jonathan b. 1806, Lewis b. 2 Oct 1808 all in Madison Co., KY and a daughter name unknown(per 1820 US Census). In 1808 Estill Co. was created from part of Madison Co. and Nathaniel's home was then in Estill Co. Numerous county records show the Wayne family living there until at least 1815. Ester's father, Abraham Lewis's, Will dated 1813 show that Nathaniel and Ester are still married and living in Estill Co., KY.

Between 1815 and 1820 the Wayne family headed west, landing in Crawford Co., IL per 1820 US Census. This area became part of Clark Co., IL in 1821 and then part of Edgar Co., IL in 1823. In the same year 1823, Nathaniel bought one of the first lots sold in the town of Paris, IL the county seat of Edgar Co., IL. In 1825 he opened a tavern in Paris and was also engaged in several land sales. About 1827 he moved to the western part of Edgar Co., a community called "Catfish", and opened another tavern.

About 1840 the whole Wayne clan moved to Wisconsin. His three sons and their families moved in the 1840's. It is not clear when Nathaniel Wayne and family moved, but he was still involved in land sales in Illinois in 1844. He died on 8 Oct. 1847 in Grant Co. and his wife died on 22 Oct 1847. His probate records show that he owned land in LaFayette Co., WI and that he still had his shoemaker tools.

Burial of Nathaniel and Ester is thought to have taken place on the farm land that his son Lewis owned 3 miles west of Boscobel, WI, along the Wisconsin river, across from Boydstown, WI.
