Joseph Bennett was the son of Jordan Bennett, a Revolutionary War veteran, and Nancy Murphy. He was raised in Mecklenburg County, Virginia on his father's tobacco plantation.
Joseph's marriage to Julia Tanner on October 15, 1827 is recorded in "Mecklenburg County Marriages 1811-1853" but shows the groom as Joseph Bennett JR. This is odd as this Joseph was not a "junior", but his Uncle Joseph Bennett was. (brother of Jordan Bennett). Based on later census records, the "Jr" appears to be in error.
The US Census of 1850 for Mecklenburg County, Virginia shows the household of Joseph Bennett as follows, (with dates of death added where known).
Joseph Bennett, farmer (b. 1797)
Julia Bennett, (b. 1806)
William R. (b.1830)
George Evans (b.1833 d.1888)
Lucy H. (b.1834)
Elizabeth Ann (b.1837)
Silas J. (b.1840 d.1864)
Mary Indiana (b.1841 d.1886)
Thomas Ludwell (b.1844 d.1928)
The grave of Thomas L. Bennett in Silas Baptist church within 2 miles of Jordan Bennett's former plantation site seems to confirm that Thomas L. Bennett was likely the grandson of Jordan Bennett through his son Joseph.
Joseph is listed as the executor of his mother's will in 1846 (Mecklenburg County will book#18, page 375) and fathered all his children between 1833 and 1844, so the 1822 date of death shown on several websites appears to be wrong.
