Pete Desigio Hernandez, 65, passed into eternal life on July 16, 2017, after a short illness. His father, Santiago Hernandez, his mother, Lucy Desigio Hernandez, and a sister, Alice Hernandez preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were two sons, Isaac and Dominic. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Martinez Hernandez, daughters Denise Hernandez Garcia and Jacalyn Hernandez Batshoun. He loved his four grandchildren, Dominic and Daniel Garcia, Kaleigh Perotti, and Jacob Batshoun. He is also survived by his sisters, Becky Hernandez Mateo and Gloria Hernandez DeLosReyes, their husbands, children, and grandchildren.

Pete was born in Delano, California, in his parents’ home on Austin Street on June 3, 1952. He attended Fremont Elementary and graduated from Delano High School in 1970. He attended Bakersfield College, then apprenticed with Jens Hvoss in his painting contractor business. Pete learned his trade well and in 1977 acquired the Hvoss’ enterprise when the elder retired. Pete was exceptional in his trade and had loyal customers who sought his expertise throughout the years.

Pete loved cooking dinner for his family and opening his home to friends and family for barbecues and milestone celebrations. He found joy in festively decorating his home for the Easter, Halloween, and Christmas holidays. He treated every child as his own and especially enjoyed treating his grandchildren to shaved ice during the hot summer months.

In the 1980s, Pete deepened his conviction to know, love, and serve the Lord, and this conviction continued throughout his lifetime. As a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, he attended Mass regularly, attended a Men’s Bible Study, and assisted in K.P. duty until his health began to decline. His love for the Lord served him well in the last days and hours of his life. He left a favorite Scripture paraphrased from the Epistle to the Colossians: Jesus is Lord of my life. Sickness and disease have no power over me. I am dead to sin and alive unto righteousness.

Rosary and Mass will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton on Monday, July 24, at 9:30 a.m.
