Jacob Koch was the founder of a large bakery that bore his name in New Brighton, Staten Island. Mr. Koch was born in Germany, his father being Jacob Koch, Sr. He sailed to America at an early age and settled in New Orleans. His brothers, Ferdinand, George and Henry located in Baltimore, Maryland.

At the beginning of the Civil War Jacob came to New York where he joined the 1st New York Lincoln Cavalry. Following the close of the war a bakery business with Jacob serving as the principal baker and the manager was opened in Stapleton. After a few years the bakery moved to Jersey St., New Brighton. The firm was known as Jacob Koch Sons. They shipped bakery goods all over the island and had a retail store on Richmond Terr. near Jersey St. After helping establish the store, his brothers Fred and George moved to Maryland and Henry went to New Jersey.

Mr. Koch married Caroline Wenz of Baden, Germany, in Stapleton, on January 29, 1870. She was a daughter of Christopher and Caroline Wenz, of a prominent Stapleton family. Her father was engaged in the cutting business in that area of Staten Island. She had a brother, Edward, who was a noted architect of New York, and also two sisters who married and became residents of New York City.

Jacob and Caroline were the parents of eight children: 1. Matilda who died July 19, 1929, 2. Katherine who married David Ripley, 3. Caroline who married William S. Jones, 4. Henry who married Mary Persick, 5. Jacob who married Elvine Comtois, 6. Edward who married Anna Marshall, 7. Hermann who served in the Navy during World War I, 8. George, died April 9, 1920 of influenza after serving in the U.S. Army during World War I.
