Joseph Bennett Jr. grew up on a tobacco plantation in southern Virginia, near the present day town of La Crosse.
He was a Revolutionary War veteran, documented by his 1833 application for pension, the 1840 US Census, as well as a 1938 letter from the National Archives to a family researcher, posted online. From the letter, it appears Joseph Jr. enlisted in April 1776 and served as a private in Captain John Ballard's company, under Col. Delaney and Col. Meredith, Virginia Troops. He saw duty in Williamsburg, Hampton, and Portsmouth. He served one month with the US Navy, aboard a vessel commanded by Captain Barron (Barrow?), cruising Hampton Roads and capturing "several enemy vessels". His next enlistment dated from January 1781, serving as a drum major in Capt. Oliver and Capt. Sander's companies, under Col. Fleming, Virginia Regiment. While there he saw several small skirmishes. He next enlisted with Capt. Mabry's Company, Col. Burrell's Virginia Regiment, and participated in a march to Gloucester, where they joined the main army under General Lafayette. He served until the surrender of Lord Corwallis at Yorktown in October 1781.
From the book "Marriage Records, 1765-1810, Mecklenburg County", Joseph married Nancy Lanier on May 24, 1785. The "surety" was Ingram Vaughan.
Joseph Jr. and Nancy had at least two sons:
John Lanier Bennett (b.1792 VA d.1860?)
Thomas Bennett (b.1799 VA d.1867 TN)
In the 22 Feb 1805 will of his father, Joseph Jr. inherited 150 acres on Hat creek. (Many online family trees incorrectly list his Joseph Bennett Sr.'s death as 22 Feb 1805, but that is the date his will was signed and filed.)
In 1838 he applied to transfer his pension to Rutherford County, TN to "be near his children". He appears in the 1840 US Census in Rutherford County, living in the household of his son Thomas.
The newspaper recorded his death on August 5th, 1843 as occurring in the home of his son Thomas.
