Mr. Frank R. Hart, 81, of Jacksonville entered into eternal rest August 1, 2017 at his residence. Funeral service will be held 12 noon Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Georgetown. Interment will follow at Coastal Carolina Verteran Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be held 6-8pm Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Georgetown.
On 31 July 1936, Frank R. Hart was born to the late Levy and Mildred Hart of Rocky Mount, NC. He grew up as a sharecropper in the rural community of Kingsboro, near Rocky Mount. He attended Sunday school and church at the Hart's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Tarboro. He attended elementary and high school in Edgecombe County school system, graduating in 1953.
With encouragement from his parents, he enrolled as a freshman at A&T State University during September 1953, selecting the field of Physical Education. While at A&T, he played the trumpet in the freshman band, boxed on the boxing team, played second base for the Aggies baseball team, and was a member of the Kinston Chapter of Kappa Alpha PSI.
During this time he met a beautiful young lady by the name of Maggie L. McEachin, who later became his wife. After graduating in December 1957, he went to New York CIty seeking employment in the recreational field. After several months of frustration of not being able to obtain a permanent position, he decided to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. After recruit training in Parris Island, SC, his first tour of duty was as an Infantryman in Okinawa, Japan. Returning to the United States in 1960, he served as a military policeman at the Marine Corps Air Station, in Cherry Point, NC.
After a long discussion with his new wife, they decided to make the corps a career. His next tour of duty would lead him to the Marine Corps Supply Center in Barstow, CA where he served as a Military Policeman. While in Barstow, he had the opportunity to meet and serve with General Jerome G. Cooper (then Captain Cooper), whom was the first black officer he had seen in his five-year tenure in the Corps. Captain Cooper encouraged him to apply for Officer Candidate School, which he did so for five years prior to being selected. After serving two tours as a Drill Instructor, he was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant and Gunnery Segeant. After a tour in the Republic of Vietnam , he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant for exceptional leadership during combat. After returning from Vietnam, he changed his MOS to MIlitary Police and attended numerous Marine Corps, Army, and Civilian Police Schools; which included the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
After 26 years of faithful service, he retired proudly as an Officer in the United States Marine Corps. Frank has many accolades and has held various positions from his service. He served as Past Commander of NABVETS, Marine Chapter 0054 of Jacksonville, NC. Frank was a member of the Montford Point Marine Association, Chapter 10 of Jacksonville, NC. Frank served for 30 years with the New River Officials, as a referee and umpire to the majority of all sports in Eastern North Carolina, in which he retired as commissioner.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie L. Hart.
Survivors include his son, Kendrick Hart of Jacksonville, NC; grandson Matthew Hart, daughter in law Amy and fianc'e Ruby Lorraine Dowd of Philadelphia , PA. After 65 years Frank and Ruby were fortunate to cross paths and instantly had a connection. In October of 2017 the two were due to be married.
