Walton was the son of Martha (Raddatz) Searl and Edward Walton Searl as well as the younger brother of Bessie Ethel Searl Goodfellow. His parents married young (he was 17, she was 15) and had 3 children in less than 3 1/2 years, the last of which was stillborn. His parents divorced and Walton and Bessie were given to different distant relatives to be raised. Walton was boating with another boy as well as the other boy's mother when the boat capsized. The mother was able to save her own son but Walton drowned. He is buried in the Raddatz plot in Merrill, WI.
