ABAR, DR. J. WESTON, died February 16, 2007.
He was the husband of Dr. Joan (Libutti) Abar for 52 years.
He was born in Lincoln Vermont, the son of the late Reverend E. James Abar and Mary (Knower) Abar. His childhood was spent mostly in Alton NH and Westminster MA and graduated from Fitchburg High School.
Due to polio as a child, he was not able to serve in the Armed Forces but taught swimming and how to safely abandon a ship for the Navy during WW II while he attended Springfield College and graduated in 1943.
Dr. Abar then entered the Philadelphia College of Medicine graduating in 1947 and later interned in Rhode Island. After practicing for 10 years in RI, he re-entered the Philadelphia College for a residency in Internal Medicine and to teach while his wife was a student there at the college.
Following his return to RI in 1963, Dr. Abar was appointed Chairman of the Dept. of Medicine at the former Cranston General Hospital. He then attended Yale University College of Medicine and became certified in nuclear medicine and later established the first nuclear medicine department in RI. He also served as Chief of Staff as well as Chairman of the Intensive Care Unit.
Dr. Abar was a member of Mt. Vernon Lodge #5 F. & AM, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Providence and the Rhode Island Shriners where he served on the medical Staff.
He was an avid sportsman raising and training Brittany Spaniels to hunt and enjoyed fishing, skiing, hunting with his dogs and later in life woodworking. During his lifetime, he traveled many times in his motor home across the United States, Canada and Alaska visiting every national park enjoying his hobbies. He also raised, rode and showed champion Arabian horses.
But, his favorite enjoyment was being an amateur radio operator. He ran the ham radio USTA net every morning for many years.
He is survived by a sister, and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grandnephews
He was the brother of the late Edith ( Abar ) Vine.
