Martha Jo loved music, and she loved teaching. She went to SMU to receive her Bachelor's in music, but then went on to receive her Master's in Teaching. She taught music, but settled into 5th grade where she stayed for the next 45 years until she retired in 1997.
She received many letters of appreciation and gratitude from her 5th grade students upon her retirement. Those letters reveal such an amazing ability to take any "stray moment" in the classroom and turn it around into something funny. A miss-behaving moment could be met with a statement like "Stop acting normal!" Sometimes the "punishment sentences" her students would have to write when staying after school might conclude with " . . . so I won't have to waste time writing these sentences."
In July of 1960, she married her husband, Frederick Allen Archer. One of the things they loved to do was travel. Many times, they traveled Mexico where she acted as interpreter (since she was also fluent in Spanish!) Frequent vacations were across the southern U.S. where they toured historical sites, and of course, always hit the various university bookstores to bring home many treasures!
She was a devout Christian. One time we were discussing what various religions believe and she just wondered aloud, "How can anyone not want to believe the Gospel? How can anyone not believe in Jesus?" And she loved her Bible! Even in her depths of Alzheimer's, she never forgot the books of the Bible. And so many of the Gospel songs we played together were always on her lips, singing every word as the music played.
Now she sings the glorious praises of Jesus our Lord in His very presence!
There will also be a memorial service at Fort Worth Presbyterian Church, 6251 Oakmont Trail, Fort Worth, TX 76132 on Saturday, June 30 at 1:00 PM in the Lecture Hall.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in the name of Martha Jo Archer to The Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 8th Ave, 7th Floor, New Youk, NY 10001.
