Mr. Henry Harold Chambers, Sr., age 89, of Rome, GA, passed away at a local health care facility Friday, January 6, 2017.

Mr. Chambers was born in Centre, Alabama, on April 16, 1927. He was the son of the late Henry Hubert Chambers and Elizabeth Lee Smith Chambers. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Emory Chambers, and five sisters, Ruby Robinson, Myrlean Hicks, Faye Bolt, Mary Jo Cape, and Dorothy Chambers; one step-son Mitch Ables; one great grandchild, Lael; his first wife Sybil Eunice Adams; and his second wife Eloise Everett Chambers.

He grew up in Spring Creek, Alabama, and Cave Spring, Georgia, and lived in the Fourth Ward with his family when they first moved to Rome. He joined the Marines in 1944, was stationed in Hawaii and was discharged in 1946. He worked at Celanese as well as the Lindale Mills. He was an entrepreneur in various businesses, last owning and operating H & S Beverage & Grocery Store. He was a member of the VFW where he served as treasurer, and he was a member of the American Legion Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 in Rome. He was an avid University of Georgia football fan, Atlanta Braves fan, and loved NASCAR.

Survivors include his wife, Bettie Ann Barrett Chambers and her daughter, Georgeann Keasler, both of Rome; two sons, Henry Harold Chambers, Jr. and his wife Jeanette of Asheville, North Carolina, and Larry Alan Chambers and his wife Margaret of Rome; one daughter, Carla Jo Chambers of Marietta, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Anissa Shoemaker, Ashley Colburn, Nathaniel Chambers, Jacob Sullins, Erin Clark, Eli Ables and Alex Ables; five great grandchildren, Madisyn, Andrew, Sarah, Caroline and Jacob, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Tuesday, January 10, 2017, from 1 until 2 p.m. at Daniel's Funeral Home with a service that followed in the Thomas B. Griffin Chapel of Daniel's Funeral Home with the Rev. Rodney Carson officiating. Interment followed at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. Those serving as pallbearers were Jonathan Shoemaker, Ashley Colburn, George Lemming, Alan Ables, Nathaniel Chambers, and Josh Lemming and Jason Lemming.

The American Legion Shanklin-Attaway Post No. 5 provided military rites. The Marine Corp League of Rome also served as honorary pallbearers. Please visit our website at www.daniels-funeralhome.com to share memories and post tributes.
