Earl D. Newton, Sr.

(December 4, 1937 - August 8, 2017)

On December 4, 1937 in Fairfield, Alabama God blessed the union of Melvin B. Newton, Sr. and Annie Mae Smoot Newton with a son whom they named Earl Drake Newton.

Earl accepted Jesus at an early age and was raised in the Mount Olive Baptist Church in Fairfield, Alabama. He was educated in the public schools of Fairfield where he received his formal education.

After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he retired after 20 years of service to his country. Earl moved to Texas where he met the love of his life, Jewel Faye Perkins, in 1967 and united in Holy Matrimony. This union was blessed with four sons.

Earl, being a man who believed in providing for his family, was employed at Amoco Oil Refinery in Texas City and retired in 1998 after 29 years of dedicated service.

In his leisure time, Earl enjoyed traveling with his wife and was an avid La Marque Cougar and Dallas Cowboys fan. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, his words were meaningful and encouraging.

Earl D. Newton Sr., lovingly known as “Papa Newt” received his reward of eternal rest on August 8, 2017 at Mainland Medical Center in Texas City at the age of 79. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Annie Mae and Melvin B. Newton, Sr.; three brothers, Alphonso Newton, James Newton and Melvin Newton, Jr.; and one son, Phillip Palmer, III.

Left with cherished memories of his life are: his loving wife of 50 years, Jewel Faye Newton; sons, Earl Newton Jr., Edwin Dion Newton (Temi) and Steven Newton (LaTeenia); daughters-in-law, Thyra Palmer Jones and Yaine Newton; and his special niece/daughter, Sherronda Searles-Galloway (Curtis). He is also survived by brothers, Andrew Newton, Ronnie Newton and Rev. Michael Newton; sisters, Marva Hornbuckle (Julius), LaVerne Dawson (Robert) and Gloria Owens; 15 grandchildren, Phillip Palmer, Cheresse Palmer, Jessieka Palmer, Janice Quiroga, Earl Newton, III., Eral Newton, Erin Newton, Eden Newton, Ashley Watson, A’Bella Newton, Steven Newton, Jr., Ka’Dyn Newton, Brennan Beall, T’Mara Holmes and LeAirre Morris; sisters-in-law, Joyce Hudson and Margarett Searles; brother-in-law, Ted Perkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
