DeEtte Byer, 93, passed away recently in Watertown after a short illness.
She was the eldest child of Laurel and Emma (Miller) Sexton, born in Crocker, SD. She attended both Crocker and Watertown schools. Following her father’s sudden death and her high school graduation, Dee immediately went to work to help support her mother and 8 siblings.
During WWII, she contributed to the war effort by working in the Portland, OR shipyards. In 1943 she married Vincent Byer in Portland and they returned to Watertown.
In Watertown Dee worked at several local businesses, most notable Dugan Sales & Service, Haggar Drug, and The Book Nook.
She was a giving and devoted mother who kept her family history alive with photos and detailed stories. She treasured her grandchildren. Dee was always ready with a helping hand, was kind and generous. She was honorable, hardworking, and valued her independence; she was proud to have made her own way in life. She enjoyed cooking and baking, was an avid reader and gardener, liked to take walks, and kept up with current events and correspondence with family and friends.
She will be sadly and deeply missed by her family and will never be forgotten by all those who knew and loved her.
A graveside memorial service will take place in spring 2015 at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Watertown.
Dee is survived by 4 children and 6 grandchildren, one sister, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977 and three sisters and four brothers.
