Obit-Gerald D Gentry, son of William Lafayette “Willie” Gentry and Amy Mae Fair born Mill Grove, Missouri, March 5 1921 and died August 19 2015 at the Missouri Veterans Home Cameron, Missouri. He was years old. Gerald was raised in Mercer County, Missouri, a 1938 graduate Princeton High School, graduated from Chillicothe Business College 1942.
May 10 1942 Gerald married Margaret Helen Puffer.June 1942 Gerald enlisted Army Air Corp Ft Leavenworth Kansas. He was Master Sergeant in Pacific Theatre and was one of the first units landing Japan fall 1945 following the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Later honorably discharged December 1945.
After his discharge, Gerald worked for Burlington Northern Railroad St Louis from 1945-1948 when he and Margaret returned to Mercer County, purchasing a farm seven miles southwest of Princeton, then farming with his dad and brother Danny operating a Grade A dairy until selling to retire 1984. He also owned and operated Gerald’s Standard Service and co-owner with Margaret of Gentry’s Flower Shop, all in Princeton.
Gerald was member of the Union Church later transferring membership to Princeton First Baptist Church then to New Hope Baptist Church. He was a 61 year Master Mason of Mercer Lodge #35 AF& AM serving as Worshipful Master, Treasurer, Chaplain and appointed District Deputy Grand Master 1981-1985. He was a member of Order of Eastern Star serving as Worthy Patron, a 69 year member of American Legion and a lifetime member of the VFW, member of the Princeton Country Club serving on Board of Directors, and served on Axtell Hospital Board of Princeton Directors.
Gerald was an avid supporter of local athletics, serving on the chain gang for PHS Tiger Football, coached American Legion baseball teams, umpired baseball and softball games and 1986 the Princeton baseball field named “Gentry Field” in his honor. He enjoyed team bowling sponsored by Flower Shop and golfing at the Princeton Country Club.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Margaret February 6 1990, his sister, Wilma Brimer, and his nephew Brad Gentry. He is survived by daughters, Fleeta Dennis (son-in-law, Bill) Platte City, MO, Jolene King Cameron, MO, and Joyce Gentry Columbia, MO; had 7 grandchildren, Bill Dennis (wife Julie), Cliff Dennis (wife Rose), Ryan Snyder (wife Abby), Brett Snyder (wife Stephanie), Casey Hansen (husband Dale), Aaron and Christopher Coleman; 11 great-grand-children, Rae Anne, Caden, Cole, and Zachary Dennis, Harper, Owen, Kendall, Ansley, and Gracyn Snyder, and Cayl and Allie Hansen; his brother, Danny Gentry (sister-in-law Louella) Princeton; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and long-time friends.
Funeral services held Friday September 4 2015 at 11:00AM, at New Hope Baptist Church, north of Princeton, Pastors Sean Hammond and Robert Nelson officiating, under the direction of the Princeton Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Service. Burial in Princeton Cemetery.
