On June 15, 1952, Rev. Bakewell was ordained to the priesthood at Weston College, Weston Massachusetts. In 1954-71, he taught English and Religion at Regis Jesuit High School in Denver. In 1972-75, he served as a counselor and director of the Family Life Program for the Archdiocese of Denver, residing at the rectory of Christ the King Parish.
From 1975, he served as a marriage counselor and confessor, residing at the Jesuit Noviate house in Denver, where he died after a long illness with cancer. His body was donated to the University of Colorado Medical School.
Rev. Bakewell is the son of Paul Bakewell Jr., a prominent St. Louis attorney, and Mary Morgan Fullerton, a niece of J. Pierpont Morgan. Rev. Bakewell’s brother, Claude, was a US congressman and postmaster in St. Louis, and their great-great-grandfather, Alexander McNair, was the first governor of Missouri.
