A resident of Tampa, passed away August 5, 2017. He was born in Fredonia, Kansas on October 10, 1923. He attended Lincoln Elementary and graduated from Fredonia High School in 1941. He was employed at the Grange Store during his high school years and worked at Boeing Aerospace Co. in Wichita until he enlisted in the Army in May, 1943. He served in the Army infantry, 97th Division with Patton's Third Army in the European Theater of Operations until Germany surrendered then the division moved to Japan for occupation duty, in September 1945. Harrie was discharged in March, 1946 having attained the rank of Sergeant. He earned a Bronze Star while in combat in Germany. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Kansas State University in 1949. He was employed by Hahner and Foreman Construction Co. in Wichita until 1958, when he moved to Florida. He worked construction with Murray Erecting Co., Austin Construction Co., Settacasi and Churilla Construction Co., finally with N.N. & B. from Jacksonville until 1975, when he became the Range Civil Engineer at Avon Park Bombing Range for the Air Force. He retired from that position in 1989. Harrie and his wife, Helen, lived in Tampa until 1981. They moved to Dunedin and then to Floral City in 1987. They returned to Tampa in 1998. He is survived by his wife, Helen Wallace Bateman; one son, Bruce Bateman and spouse, Olivia of Saipan, MP; one daughter, Kathleen Wood and husband, Roland Wood of Seffner; grandson, Alexander of Saipan, MP; a stepdaughter, Loraine Garcia and husband, Jay Garcia, M.D.; one stepgrandson, Michael Garcia, M.D. and wife, Virginia; a stepgranddaughter, JoAnna Garcia Swisher and husband, Nick; and four stepgreat-grandchildren, Andrew Garcia, Gabrielle Garcia, Emerson Swisher, and Sailor Swisher, all of Tampa. He was of the Methodist Faith and was a lifetime member of VFW Post 712Z Floral City, FL and the KSU Alumni Association. Harrie liked camping in the Smoky Mountains at Laurel Springs, NC, and picking bluegrass and Gospel music on his five-string banjo. Cremation with no memorial service and the ashes to be reposited at Bushnell National Cemetery.
