Walter James Dickson was born on 12 September 1878 in Clayton County, Georgia. After finishing high school, he attended Gordon Institute (now Gordon College), in Barnesville, GA, where he also played football. He also attended Medical School in Atlanta until graduating in 1906 and started practicing medicine in Rebecca, GA.

Walter also owned a farm in Rebecca, GA (he worked on his father's farm in his youth). Walter had a very rural practice in Rebecca.

In January of 1926, he moved to Nashville, GA and set up another practice. He had a small office but spent most of his time making house calls and never practiced medicine in a hospital. He performed his operations on the table of his patients' house. He was usually paid in food because the patients could not afford to pay him with money. He lost his car one year because of the fact that people could not pay him. He would borrow money so that he could make house calls.

Walter died of pneumonia as a complication of typhus fever on 21 December 1939 in Nashville, GA . He was buried in Nashville.
