When Charles Toy was born on May 8, 1882, in Seskinore, Tyrone, Northern Ireland, his father, Patrick, was 45 and his mother, Jane Rodgers, was 39. He married Helen M Cooney on November 30, 1916. They had six children in 10 years. He died on August 15, 1950, in Dorchester, Massachusetts, at the age of 68.

*His mother's family name was originally McCrory but when the English took control of Northern Ireland they changed the original Irish family name to "Rodgers".

Charlie immigrated to the U.S. in Sep/Oct 1907. He accompanied his eldest sister Annie Jackson to the U.S. when she and her two young children were returning home to Boston after a visit to the family in Seskimore, Tyrone, Northern Ireland. She had gone home to say goodby to her loved ones because Annie knew she was dying (Jan 1908).

Charlie's occupation on the ship's manifest was "clerk". When arriving into Boston's port he went to go stay with Annie & her family. From some point after saving money he went to nursing school. His 1918 WW I draft card listed his occupation as "Nurse in Training".
