Mary was the daughter of David and Mary Polly Hicks Florence and the sister of John Hicks Florence. She was born in Lincoln County Georgia and married Asa Clayton Allen in 1847 in Alabama. Mary was buried in the Florence Family Cemetery and reinterred with the others to Mesquite Cemetery.

According to Mesquite Cemetery records Mary Elizabeth is buried on same plot as Lawrence Allen, however Ann Allen is buried next to her son Lawrence. Mary Elizabeth is in row behind them. All are buried in Florence Family Plot.
