John Thomas Gates was born February 14, 1930 in Panola County, Texas, to James Tillit and Mineola McLane Gates. He was raised in rural Panola County. John married Emma Jean Mills in 1945. John and Emma moved to Deadwood from Conroe, Texas, after retiring from his business, Gates Saw Company, that he owned and operated for over 40 years. He enjoyed cattle ranching at his J&E Ranch. Mr. Gates was a member of the New Prospect Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother, Smith Gates, sisters, Avery Taylor and Opal Johnson.
