Robert C Boyd was the second son of William H. and Loretta May (Barron) Boyd. He had siblings:

He was a civil engineer who worked for the Iowa highway commission. He married Hildred J. (Caffrey) Hidy in the 1930s and they lived in Ottumwa at the time. They lived in Ames the past 40 years and was a retired engineer for the Department of Transportation.

He was a World War I veteran and was a member of Ames First Christian Church, Iowa Engineering Society, American Legion, Order of the Eastern Star, Masonic Lodge and Consistory.

Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Boyd and Naomi Bagley, both of Des Moines.
