Baker, Clarence Truman, 100, of Dallas, Texas passed away on 8/3/17. He was born Nov. 6, 1916 near McEwen, TN to Clarence H. and Geneva Baker. Love for God and family were hallmarks of his life. He graduated from David Lipscomb College in Nashville in 1937. A pitcher for the Bisons baseball team, he was the oldest surviving member of any Lipscomb athletic team. During WWII, he attained the rank of Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Air Corps, later to become the U. S. Air Force, serving as fighter pilot instructor and commander of the 58th Fighter Squadron of the 33rd Fighter Group, 10th Air Force in the China/Burma/India theater of operations. A decorated P-38 pilot, he flew 75 combat missions over China and Burma receiving the Airman’s Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters; the Distinguished Flying Cross; the Asiatic/Pacific Campaign Medal; American Campaign Medal; American Defense Service Medal and WWII Victory Medal. He remained on active duty in the Air Force Reserve for many years. Married to Dorothy Barnes Baker in June 1952, the couple raised their 2 children in Houston and Dallas for many years. He retired in 1985 after a 26-yr career in sales with Continental Emsco, a major manufacturer of oil field and ship to shore oil transport equipment. Truman’s lifelong passion was quail hunting. He also loved playing golf and watching football. He was a beloved member of Waterview Church of Christ in Richardson, TX for over 40 years. Preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy, he is survived by daughter Candy Gombert and husband Gary of Dallas; son Randy Baker and his wife Ellen of Plano; sister Sybil Ridings and her daughter Susan Swang of Nashville and cousin Ralph Emery of Nashville. He leaves behind 7 grandchildren: Braden Baker; Carrie Baker; Reed Gombert; Cara Lee West and husband Jeremy; Lindsay Florence and husband Luke; Abigail Jackson and husband Phillip; Whitney Loughlin and husband Worth; and 4 great grandchildren: Jireh, Elim, Brielle, and Titus. Visitation will be from 2-4PM on Sunday, Aug 6. at Restland Funeral Home, 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas. TX 75243. A memorial service will be Monday, Aug 7 at 10:00 AM at Waterview Church of Christ, 1409 N. Waterview Dr., Richardson, TX 75080. The family would like to thank all the people who have shown their love and support to Truman and his family including the wonderful staff at Appletree Court and Arbor Hills Memory Care.
