Maude Villa Gleason was born in Maine, a daughter of John Thompson Ward 1870-1947 and Mary Elizabeth Clark 1866-1933. She had siblings Cora Pearl 1887-1969, Minnie Ethel Belle 1889–?, John Franklin 1894–?, Amy 1896–?, William Mildon 1897–1961, Edna Veda 1899–2000 and John Austin 1904–?.

She graduated from Massachusetts General School of Nursing in 1915 and served in the Army Nurse Corps in World War I. She was the first supervisor of nurses at Macon County Hospital, Decatur, Illinois.

Maude married Robert Maurice McGrew in 1923 in Silver City, New Mexico. They had a son Robert Maurice 1924–2008. Her husband died in 1926 and in 1931 she married William Gleason 1898-1991 in Lordsburg, New Mexico. They a daughter Dorothy W. 1932-2014.

They moved to Phoenix, Arizona.

Maude was a member of the Hazel Morton American Legion Post and First Congregational Church where she appeared in fashion shows. She was a gardener and had contributed articles to the Arizona Farmer magazine about poinsettias.

Survivors included her husband, William J.; children, Mrs. Dorothy (Harold) E. Wayner and Robert M. McGrew; five grandchildren; and two sisters.
