Jenkin Breckenridge Williams was nicknamed "Pappy Dick" probably to avoid confusion in his family, since he was given a family name. He was preceded by Jenkin Williams (born 23 Feb 1806 in Perry County, Kentucky - died 28 July 1851 in Buchanan County, Missouri), who married Martha "Mattie" Haddix (born 1806 in Russell County, Virginia, death date unknown but location was Breathitt County, Kentucky). He also had an uncle named Jenkin W Williams (born Sep 1839 in Buchanan County, Missouri - died 1903 in Buchanan County, Missouri) who married Mary A Hurst 11 Aug 1863, in Andrew County, Missouri.

Some of the census records where he is listed are sometimes incorrect, or illegible. One census-taker assumed his name was Richard because he was called "Dick", and one wrote Jenkin so illegibly that it looked like Julian. Another census listed him as "Jink". This made it difficult to trace his roots, until a death record was received that showed his correct name on it.

He was the son of William Henry Williams (b. 09 Jan 1826, Haddix, Clay, Kentucky, died 17 Nov 1888, Dearborn, Platte, Missouri) and Chaney Hurst (b 18 Jan 1828 in Haddix, Clay, Kentucky, died 18 May 1923 in Dearborn, Platte, Missouri). They were married 21 Jul 1850 in Buchanan County, Missouri.

Jenkin married Mary Elizabeth Hays (Oct 1862-1915) on 20 Oct 1881 at the house of his brother, Daniel Henry Williams, (1853-1929). They had 8 daughters and 2 sons: Sarah Jane Williams (April 1883), Mayme Francis Williams (1884), Harmon Williams (1887-1954), William H Williams (abt 1888-1954), Callie Williams (1891-1964), Delphia Angeline Williams (1893-1963), Laura A Williams (Apr 1896), Lydia Williams (Dec 1898), Etta M Williams (abt 1903), and Jessie Williams (abt 1910)
