William George Beckley, Sr. , of Hamburg, loving husband, father, and grandfather, died in the early morning on Wednesday August 3. He was 95 years old.

He was born in Lebanon PA, and was the son of the late Joseph F. and Ada M. (née Koons) Beckley.

He was a 1939 graduate of Hamburg High School.

Bill, as his friends knew him, began a lifelong interest in woodworking by following his father into the trade of pattern making, a highly skilled profession that required 5 years of apprenticeship and which worked in tandem with industrial foundries in the making of metal castings, the basis for mass produced objects. His expertise in this trade was a necessary part of the war effort during WWII. He also enlisted and served in the Army during the latter part of that war.

In the early 1960’s, Bill, along with four other partners, formed the Hamburg Pattern Works, Inc., located on Plum Alley in Hamburg, where they made diverse patterns for companies throughout the United States and Canada. One notable pattern, a large turbine for a water dam, was in appearance, an astonishingly beautiful abstract work of art.

Bill was a stalwart and devoted family man, raising two children, William G. Jr. and Constance A., with his beloved wife Anna M. (née Muller, deceased November 7, 2011). He became active in his church, The First United Church of Christ in Hamburg, and served as a Deacon on the Consistory. He was an enthusiastic scout master in the Boy Scouts, and he watched his young scouts grow into senior citizens whom he would greet at the Third Street Café in Hamburg.

Upon retirement, Bill resumed his interest in golf, but he never gave up his love of woodworking. In 2007 he was asked to make a simple communion table for the church. His response was to make an ornate solid oak table with hand carved lettering for the invitation to commune. It stands, a permanent fixture, in the sanctuary of the church.

Bill, a gentleman’s gentleman, will be sorely missed by his many friends and loved ones. In addition to his son and daughter, he is survived by a daughter-in-law, Laurie Beckley and son-in-law, Sven Hartmann, and two grandchildren, Tristan and Liam Beckley.

The funeral service will be held at the First United Church of Christ, 76 South 3rd St. Hamburg, on Tuesday, August 8th, at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held from 10:00 AM until time of service. Burial will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Tilden Township.
