Jackie Howell, age 69 of Pocahontas, passed away Friday, August 4, 2017, at Bolivar General Hospital.

A native and life-long resident of Hardeman County, he was the son of the late Willie and Gertrude Sisco Howell. On January 4, 1966, he was united in marriage to Martha Whimley Howell, who survives. Mr. Howell was active in law enforcement for a total of 31 years having served as Chief of Police in Hornsby for over 9 years and was a deputy under Sheriff Delphus Hicks. He also worked in logging and farming. A member of the Brints Chapel Baptist Church, he enjoyed training horses, coon hunting (in his early years) and telling stories. His family characterized him as having "never met a stranger."

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Tony Howell, Timmy Howell (Peggy) and Mike Howell (Melissa), all of Middleton; one daughter, Tina Marcum (Kevin) of Middleton; one sister, Linda Webb (Ray) of Jackson; three brothers, Orville Howell (Bonnie), William Howell and Frankie Howell (DeAnna), all of Middleton; twelve grandchildren, Eric Howell (Lorie Ann), Ryan Howell, Chasity Phelps (Chris), Logan Howell, Katlyn Howell, Lane, Kursten and Ethan Marcum, Michael, Tiffane and Abby Howell and Zach Morris; and five great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Tyler and Jaxson Howell, Chyanne and Chole Phelps.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Lily Faye Howell, Sadie Mae Howell and Dorothy Marie Howell; four brothers, Virgil, James, Leon and Billy Joe Howell; and a granddaughter, Janea' Howell.
