Martha Louise Jackson was born in Langston, Oklahoma on July 28, 1923. She was the third of five children from the God inspired union of Thomas Henry and Gladys Page Jackson.
Martha departed this life on July 28, 2017.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Henry Jackson and Gladys E. Page Jackson, her brothers, Thomas P. Jackson and Dr. Andrew H. Jackson, and a sister, Jane Jackson.
Each of the children was born in a location where their father taught Agriculture at various Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), primarily in the Southern region of the United States.
Martha graduated from Sumner High School and later received an Undergraduate Degree from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. Martha was married to Clyde E. Newton and became the mother of two children, Thomas Henry and Camellia Elizabeth. She began her working career as a Secretary at Douglass State Bank in Kansas City, Kansas and later at the American Red Cross in Kansas City, Kansas.  After the American Red Cross offered her a job in St. Louis, Missouri, Martha relocated the family to St. Louis and pursued her career as a Social Worker. During this time, she acquired a Master’s Degree in Social Work at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University (receiving advanced training in Gerontology – the study of the aging). Additional certifications in higher education included Special Education and Business Education. She also began her teaching career in St. Louis, at the State School for the Mentally Challenged and various high schools within the St. Louis School District.
Upon leaving St. Louis, Martha returned to Kansas City to accept a position as an Instructor in Gerontology at Rockhurst College. Later, she worked in the Administration of the Kansas City Kansas Community College. Martha’s teaching career culminated as an Educator in Business at the Kansas City, Missouri VO-Tech high school, followed by the RJ Delano School, for the orthopedically handicapped, in the Kansas City Missouri School District.
Martha enjoyed cooking, baking, and entertaining friends and family during holidays and special occasions. At the home, she loved spending time outdoors and gardening in her flower beds. As a younger woman, Martha was an avid sports enthusiast and participated in swimming, bowling, and tennis. In retirement, Martha devoted herself to caring for her parents, grandchildren, and various Christian oriented activities.
Residing in Lee’s Summit, she was a member of the Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church, active in the Sunday School and Women’s Circle ministries. She was also a member of the AKA Sorority, Inc.
Martha lived with her loving daughter and son-in-law, Camellia and Danny Stanton (affectionately known as her “Son #2”) for many years. They became her primary Caregivers through her advanced years, providing a wonderful environment during the twilight of her life.
Martha L. J. Newton is survived by her sister, Gladys Finnell of Nebraska; a son, Thomas Henry Newton (Renee); a daughter, Camellia Elizabeth Newton-Stanton (Danny); three granddaughters: Camille Grant, Maria Stanton-Dumas, and Monique Newton Smalls; five great- grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family, and loved ones. She is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Henry Jackson and Gladys E. Page Jackson, her brothers, Thomas P. Jackson and Dr. Andrew H. Jackson and sister, Jane Jackson.
