Janet Mary Cross, age 88, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away Wednesday, July 26th, 2017, after having a stroke over two months before. She was born in Los Angeles, California, on January 21st, 1929, to Mary and Michel Allawos.

Janet married George Thomas Cross in Los Angeles, California, on August 24th, 1947, and started their family. They had two children, and then moved to Sutherlin, Oregon, in April of 1953. From 1954 to 1964, she had five more children.

Being a mother and housewife, Janet also worked several jobs when needed, to help with the household income. In 1971, she started working out of her bedroom, buying and selling lumber. Eventually they began their lumber wholesale business, George and J. Cross Trucking, DBA Janco Sales.

Janet was very instrumental in starting St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, in Sutherlin. She was very involved in numerous aspects of the church and community. In 1995, she received the Spiritual Leader of the Year Award, she was active in Altar Society, and was in charge of the altar boys for the church. She helped with religious education classes, helped cleaning the church, sang in the church choir and made visits to hospitals and nursing homes. She had a special gift of bringing people closer to God and teaching them about her faith. She touched many hearts. She and her husband George retired in 1986, and turned their business over to their sons.

After retirement, she and George traveled, and loved camping at the Oregon Coast. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and making many special things for her family. After losing her husband in 2006, she spent most of her time taking communion to the sick and home bound. Due to her health in the last few years it became hard for her to continue what she loved to do most; which was to serve the Lord. After her stroke in May, she went to live at The Taylor House.

We want to thank The Taylor House for the loving care they gave her for the last three weeks of her life. She will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her five children, two sons and three daughters, Cathy and Gene Tipton of Brentwood California, Ron and Tami Cross, Rick and Debra Cross of Sutherlin, Connie and David Knight of Roseburg, and Carolyn and Jay Conn of Sutherlin; nineteen grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren, and two arriving soon; nine great-great-grandchildren, and three arriving soon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Thomas Cross; two sons, Edward Thomas Cross and Robert George Cross; a daughter, Christine (Tina) Lorraine Gilman; a great-granddaughter, Sage Christine Gilman; her mother and father; two brothers; and one sister.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 5th, 2017, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with funeral mass following at 11 a.m., with Father Jose’ Manual Campos Garcia officiating. Janet will be laid to rest next to her husband at Valley View Cemetery.
