William Abbott Saunders, 63, merchant and retired mail carrier, died suddenly at his home at Moneta at 12:15 o'clock January 25. Born and reared in this county, Mr. Saunders was a son of Mrs. Minerva Fitzpatrick Saunders, who survives him, and the late J. S. Saunders. He was a member of Bethlehem Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Mrs. Edna Hawkins Saunders, and the following children: Mrs. N. H. Robertson, of Bedford, Mrs. M. B. Overstreet and J. H. Saunders, of Roanoke, Mrs. Hammett Mitchell, of California, Miss Martha Saunders of Moneta, Miss Nellie Saunders, of Fieldale, Sgt. Hilary A. Saunders, of Missouri, and Cpl. Riley Saunders and Cpl. Spotswood Saunders in foreign service. Surviving also are three grandchildren, a brother, Joe E. Saunders, of Goodview, and two sisters, Miss Myrtle Saunders, of Goodview, and Mrs. W. A. Hawley, of Axton. Funeral services were held at the Bethlehem Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock by the Revs. Joseph Curry, H. S. Cooper, and A. W. Connelly. Burial was in Mountain View cemetery, Vinton. Active pallbearers were S. W. Woodford, C. P. Burnette, B. W. Dinwiddie, D. H. Rucker, G. E. Hicks and E. M. Overstreet.
