Paul L. Doherty, 94, of Highland, IN passed peacefully into Heaven at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, July 29, 2017, at Munster Community Hospital. Born April 2, 1923, in Rockford; son of, Leon and Anna Elizabeth (Von Der Vellen) Doherty. Paul, a native of Rockford, IL, 1941 graduate of Rockford West High School, and member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church where he served as usher, hymn leader, and Eucharistic Minister. He served in the US Army Air Corp in Bari, Italy during WWII. On September 11, 1948, he married his loving wife, the late, Mary Elizabeth 'Bette' Burns. With Illinois Bell Telephone for 35 years, serving as District Manager, 12 years as the Clerk-Treasurer of Highland and 12 years as the Vice-President of Business Development for First Financial Bank. Generous with his time and eager to serve; member of the American Legion Post #16, VFW Post 1109, Chamber of Commerce in Highland, Town Trustee 8 years, Town President 4 years, Volunteer Fireman, Highland Water Board, Lake Area United Way Executive Board, Chairman Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission, State President of the Indiana League of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers, President Catholic Charities Board of Lake County, IN, Chairman of the Divisional Board and Finance Committee of Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, Dyer, IN, recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash Award, Board member of: Bishop Noll Institute Foundation, The Arc Northwest IN, Salvation Army, Respite Care Services, Greater Hammond Community Food Services plus many other charitable and civic organizations. Paul will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend to many. His work for the many charitable causes and noteworthy organizations were all part of Paul's strong desire to be a public servant. Many will remember his Veterans Day speeches and his singing at Hartsfield Village, Community Hospital, and at WJOB on St. Patrick's Day. He is survived by his children: Paul (Kathleen) Doherty and Peter (Beverly) Doherty of Schererville, Philip (Cynthia) Doherty of Elmhurst, Beth (Richard) Courtright of Highland, Jean (Brian) Rycerz of Schererville, John (Janet) Doherty of Sugar Grove. Grandchildren: Peter (Melissa) Doherty, Colleen (David) Moerlein, Michael (Bess) Doherty, JoAnna and Matthew Doherty, Rachel (Keith) Webster. Joseph and Patrick Rycerz, Maguire, Hannah and Shane Doherty. Great-grandfather of: Gabriel and Kate Webster, Conor and Reagan Doherty, and Sierra Moerlein. Siblings: Marjorie Bengston of Rockford, Betty (J.O.) Kopplin of Colorado, Kathleen (James) North of Rockford, Marilyn Wolfe of Rockford, Harry (Charlene) Doherty of Rockford, Michael (Margaret Knoup) Doherty of Rockford. Sisters-in-law: June Doherty of Rockford, Sr. Jeanne Burns of Adrian, MI, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Paul is preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Patrick and Larry Doherty; sister Eleanor, sisters-in-law: Lois and Carol Doherty; brothers-in-law: Cliff Bengston, Bill Dutmer, Ron Wolfe, and Jerry Johnson. Paul's family would like to thank the staff members at Hartsfield and special friends Dominic and Joann Noce, Jim Van Prooyen, and Rena Gregory. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. noon to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 3, 2017, FAGEN-MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 8580 Wicker Ave. (Indianapolis Blvd.) St. John, IN. 219-365-2674.
