Alexander Bowie

Alexander, or "Old Man Bowie" as he was known in San Juan, ran a bakery in town. Alexander and his family came to San Juan from Canada, where Alexander had originally moved from his native country of Scotland.

One of Alexander's sons, Joseph, was an expert accountant and for a time worked in San Jose and in the New Almaden quicksilver mines. He was also a deputy sherrif of Santa Clara county. Alexander had another son named Alex.

There were four daughters in the Bowie family. The eldest, Elizabeth, taught French and music at the school in San Juan for a long time. The other daughters were Agnes, Charlotte, and Jane who married Elisha Hall.
