NADINE HAZEL BYRD born July 22, 1917 in Oakland, California. The second of six children of Irma Vaughns Byrd and Harvey D. Byrd, both deceased. Attending S.F. State University she received a B.A. Degree in education. She received her graduate nurses degree upon completion of 3 years of nursing school at Highland Alameda County Hospital. She attended graduate school at Colombia University in New York where a M.S. Degree in Science were awarded. She served as supervisor of the men and women surgical wards then, later became assistant director of nurses at Highland Hospital. She worked and taught biological science classes for many years. She was an instructor of student nurses at Kaiser Permanente Hospital and later she served as director of nursing of the original Kaiser Hospital Facility. Holy names College was her home base for 18 years, where she was a professor of biological science, mainly anatomy and physiology. After 18 years at holy names, she opted to teach at Contra Costa College where she put a great deal of effort trying to stimulate an interest in biological science among all students. She enjoyed teaching and especially her students. She authored two books, one on "Diseases of the eye", and the second was "Byrd's Primer", A Math Book.
