--Son of Doyle Edward Short and wife Lelia Agee. He grew up in Charlotte and graduated from Harding High School in 1950.

--He was named "Most Promising Boxer" in The Ring Magazine in 1955. Billy was inducted into the NC Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990. He was a pro boxer for some time, winning all 13 professional fights. His boxing career ended with an automobile accident where he lost a kneecap.
