Algerian Statesman. He served as the Prime Minister of Algeria from August 21, 1993 to April 11, 1994. During the Algerian War of Independence from 1954 to 1962, he was the editor of the main rebel group FLN's newspaper El Moudjahid. Toward the end of the war, he was part of the negotiating team that came to an agreement with France in March of 1962 that brought independence to Algeria. After independence, he went on to serve in several ambassadorial and government ministerial positions before becoming prime minister in 1993. As the Algerian ambassador to the United States from 1979 to 1982, he was one of the main negotiators during U.S. hostage crisis in Iran. He also was a member of the high state committee that governed Algeria from 1992 to 1994 during its civil war against armed Islamists. He would serve in this position for a year until stepping down. He later became the head of a minor political party, the National Republican Alliance. He passed away after a long illness.
