He was born on September 17, 1962 in Burke County to the late Roscoe “Sonny” Garrison and Alma Jean Pruett Garrison.
“Byrd” was a graduate of Freedom High School Class of 1980 and Western Piedmont Community College where he studied as a para legal. He graduated from Lees McRae in 2006 with a degree in Criminal Justice. He was a former employee of Cooper Broadcasting and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Morganton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his aunts, Julia Carr, Mary Lou Whisnant and Durlene Secrest; uncles, Ray Pruett and Roy Pruett.
Richard is survived by his aunts, Laura Gordon and her husband, Waits and Jeanette Kerley; cousins, Jane and Rob Carr; and his beloved canine companion, Sonny.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, July 31, 2017 at Forest Hill Cemetery.
