Shirley, known by "Trotsie" to her friends and family, graduated from Horace Mann High School and Adelphi University. In 1951 she was married to the Rev. Edmund S. Mathews, former Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Fishkill, NY. The early years of their 36 year marriage were spent in ministry in the Black River region near Lake Ontario. She became an advocate for special needs children, especially those with autism. One of her proudest moments was being interviewed by noted journalist Mary Margaret McBryde. Later Shirley played a central role in founding the Fishkill Historical Society, where she was a long-serving President, and in saving the Van Wyck Homestead from demolition. She had a penchant for raising and releasing wounded or abandoned wild creatures brought to her by friends and strangers. These included numerous rabbits, squirrels, a raccoon and a crow. Trotsie enjoyed sketching and was an avid painter.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Murray of Manassas, VA, and son Jonathan Mathews of Wappingers Falls. Her eldest child, Stanley Mathews, is previously deceased. Trotsie was also blessed with six loving grandchildren, Lucus and Mackenzie Murray, and Emily, Aidan, Isaac and Abigail Mathews. She was predeceased by her sister, Lucille Weller, of Amesbury, MA.
Visitation will be Saturday, January 21st, between the hours of 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM at the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Home, 1028 Main St., Fishkill, NY. A Funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM at the funeral home.
