He attended Lawing Elementary School and graduated from Plato Price High School in 1944. After high school, he worked for the War Department in Washington, D.C. until he was called into the Armed services. At the completion of basic training, he served in Japan, receiving an honorary discharge from the US Army in 1947.
He married the late Mrs. Virginia Wrotten Caldwell in 1948, his wife of 43 years and her death in 1991. They became the proud parents of two sons.
After serving his country, Louis became an apprentice to learn the craft of brick masonry. By 1966, this Master Brick Mason started his own business – Louis Caldwell Construction, a business built by word of mouth and referrals.
In August 1996, he married Celessie Avery Collins , a former classmate at Plato Price and gained two daughters. She died in 2019.
Constant throughout his life was his dedication to his family, his church and his service to God’s people. For over 70 years, he was a member of Wilson Heights Church of God, serving as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, Trustee, and helped build the current multi-purpose facility of Wilson Heights. Louis provided leadership and service to the Church of God across the state of North Carolina. For decades, he has also been a member of Gideons International.
He is survived by a son; daughters-in-law; step-daughters; two brothers; two sisters; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. His son Reginald and brothers David Henry and Robert and sister Mary Martha Jackson predeceased him.
Funeral service was held at Ebenezer Baptist Church.
