He was born in Pineville, North Carolina, one of nine children of the late H. Clay Sanders and Annie Smith Sanders.
Ernie was also predeceased by his devoted wife, Evelyn Gay Bain Sanders.
Ernie served in the United States Navy, and was honorably discharged July 31, 1946. He was an educator in the Henrico County Public Schools, serving as a history teacher, assistant principal, and principal. He retired while principal at Cashell Donahoe Elementary School.
Ernie received a Bachelor's of Science degree from Richmond Professional Institute (VCU), a Master's Degree from The College of William & Mary, and a Doctorate degree from Nova University.
He is survived by a brother-in-law, Warren C. Bain and his wife, Nancy of Dinwiddie, VA; sisters-in-law, Gwendolyn Bain Carter of Petersburg, VA, Peggy C. Bain of Highland Springs, VA, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Ernie was especially fond of his niece, Carole Gwen Carter (CG) of Henrico, VA.
Ernie was a member of Chester United Methodist Church and the Chester Rotary Club. He and Gay were members of the "Joy Singers" at their church.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 31, 2017, at Chester United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service.
The interment will take place at 2 p.m. at the Bain Family Cemetery on Bain Road, Dinwiddie, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Chester United Methodist Church, 12132 Percival Street, Chester, VA 23831.
The family is being served by the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
