Rachel Davis, a daughter of Elizabeth (née Bland) and Jesse Davis, was born reportedly in January 1844 in Pendleton County, then in Virginia, now in West Virginia, where her parents were married in 1827. Rachel was an infant when her mother died: her father remarried in 1846. The Davis family, including Rachel, age 7, was enumerated in 1850 in Pendleton County. She was not enumerated in 1860.

Rachel Davis and "Milaway Phares" were married on 9 January 1862 in Pendleton County, Virginia. John Milloway Pharis (or Phares), a Confederate private, was then on parole. He had mustered on 9 June 1861 in the 62nd Regiment, Virginia Mounted Infantry; was captured about 5 weeks later on 13 July 1861; and after a few days released on parole. This allowed him to return home, but prohibited him from active military service until formally exchanged, which occurred on 16 August 1862. The first of the couple's nine children, Isaac, was born on 22 November 1862. (Milloway had two daughters from a prior marriage.)

Census records and birth places of the couple's children help to trace the family's movements. The first three sons were born in 1862, 1865, and 1867 in what is now West Virginia. Daughter Virginia was born in March 1870 in Le Roy, McLean County, Illinois, and the Pheris family was farming in July 1870 in DeWitt County, Illinois. Daughter Anna was born in 1872 in Gibson City, Ford County, Illinois. The Pheris family went back to West Virginia, where twins Laura and Mary were born in 1875. Daughter Emily was born in 1878 in Gibson City. By 1880 the family was living in nearby Fisher, Champaign County, Illinois, and daughter Grace was born in 1887 in Urbana, Champaign County.

Rachel and Milloway Pheris may have separated by 1900. In the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Censuses, Champaign County, Rachel was the head of her household. Her husband in 1900 was enumerated in a daughter's household, and in 1910 in a son's. Milloway Pheris died in 1917 at the age of 88. Rachel Pheris in 1920 was living in Champaign with two daughters. She died from pneumonia in a hospital in 1925 at the age of 81, survived by five of her children.

Notes

In the Jesse Davis household, the order of enumeration in 1850 is informative. After Jesse is his second wife Irene followed by their two children, ages 2 and 1. Next are Jesse's children with his first wife, from ages 21 down to 5. Rachel Davis is not found in the 1860 U.S. Census; father and step-mother in Pendleton Co. (Milloway Pheris also not found.)

Rachel Davis and Milaway Phares, 9 Jan 1862, Pendleton Co., Virginia. Bride, age 18 (born about 1844), daughter of E. and J. Davis. Groom, age 33 (born about 1829), son of D. and Isaac Phares. The 1862 marriage was the third for Milloway Pheris. He reportedly married Catherine Davis in the late 1840s, and married Susan Davis in 1852 in Pendleton County. Probably Susan, and perhaps Catherine, too, were sisters of Rachel Davis. One Susan Davis, age 17, was enumerated in 1850 with Rachel Davis. Rachel's parents, married in 1827, may have had a daughter old enough to have been married in the late 1840s.
