Jon Lenox Evans, 84, longtime resident of Gary, IN, transitioned to heaven on July 28, 2017. A strong advocate for community building, he was involved in the Gary Model Cities program, Gary Genesis Center membership board, and he retired from a 25 year career in community planning with HUD in 2002. An alum of Indiana University, Jon was active in many civic organizations, including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He was a member of St. Timothy Community Church for over 50 years. Jon lived with his family in Hermitage, TN, and is survived by his children Jon II, Jana-Kai, and Jeffrey (Latisha) Evans, and grandsons Jarrad Quin Hall Smith and Jarius A. Evans. Cremains interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, 4450 Harrison St., Gary, IN 46408 on Aug. 19, 2017 at 1:00pm, and a memorial celebration will be held at 3:30pm at St. Timothy Community Church Banquet Hall, 1600 W. 25th Ave., Gary, IN 46404.
