Dr. Homer Bryan Allen Jr., 97, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, July 27, 2017, in Brownwood.
Homer was born in Temple on Oct 24, 1919, to Dr. Homer Bryan Allen Sr. and Carrie Camp Allen. He graduated from Brownwood High School in 1936. He attended Texas A&M and was on the swim team until 1939, when he accepted an appointment to the Naval Academy in Annapolis. His class was rushed through to have officers for World War II, so he graduated from the Naval Academy in 1942. While as a commissioned officer in the navy, he served as a chief engineer, chief gunnery officer, executive officer, and navigator on three different ships - the USS Kearney, USS Watts, and USS Rowe. He was discharged in 1946 after having witnessed the end of WW II from his ship.
Homer then attended medical school at UT Galveston. It was while in medical school in Galveston that he met the love of his life, Carolyn Lenore (Jolly) Jordan, who was a pharmacist in Galveston at the time. Homer and Jolly were married on Sept. 18, 1948. Upon graduation from medical school in 1950, Homer and Jolly moved back to Brownwood where Homer practiced medicine with his father at Medical Arts Hospital. In 1954, he moved his family to McGregor, where he practiced medicine until 1960. At that time, he decided to specialize in ophthalmology, so he moved the family to Baltimore for his residency in Johns Hopkins Hospital. After finishing his residency in 1963, Homer set up his practice back in Brownwood, where he practiced ophthalmology until his retirement in 1993.
He loved his Savior and Lord Jesus, serving as a Sunday teacher, a Gideon, and a medical missionary in Pakistan, Australia and Mexico. He enjoyed his family, hunting, raising cattle, reading, and was an avid Brownwood Lion football fan.
Homer was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Homer Bryan Allen Sr. and Carrie Camp Allen; his wife, Jolly Allen; and his three brothers, Sam Allen and wife Sweetie, Wendell Allen and wife Joan, and Charlie Allen and wife Pat.
He is survived by children, Carrie Singleton and husband Vic, Jolly Willingham and husband Danny, Jenny Williams, and Bryan Allen and wife Kathy, all of Brownwood; grandchildren, Cody Singleton and wife Krista of Austin, Jennifer Broughton and husband Clint of Brownwood, Daniel Willingham of Lubbock, Nathan Willingham of Xion, China, Keeley Kirkland and husband Patrick of Arlington, Jacob Allen and wife Jessica of Brownwood, and Brock Allen of Lubbock. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, Saylor, Lawson, Silas, Berkley, Briar, and Gwenyth, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
