He was a respected and beloved doctor in Chattanooga for thirty years. He was born in Jackson, Mississippi on April 10, 1938 to the late Richard Gladen Caldwell and Mary Louise Jenkins Caldwell.
Faith was a very important aspect of Dr. Caldwell's life. His faith in Jesus Christ was reflected in the care and compassion he exhibited towards his family, friends, co-workers and patients. He was a faithful member of Rivermont Presbyterian Church.
He graduated from Flora High School in Flora, Mississippi in 1956. He was also a graduate of Millsaps College and the University of Mississippi Medical School in Jackson, Mississippi, where he received his M.D. degree in 1965. Dr. Caldwell served his internship and anesthesiology residency at Erlanger Hospital from 1965-1968. He served two years at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Quantico, Virginia holding the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
In 1970, Dr. Caldwell and his family returned to Chattanooga where he joined Anesthesiologists Associated. One of Dr. Caldwell's greatest pleasures was being with his family and friends. They enjoyed many happy times together, especially the summer vacations spent in Destin, Florida. In addition, Dr. Caldwell's interests and hobbies included photography, model railroading, sailing, cruising, aviation and astronomy.

He was a member of the Barnard Astronomical Society and received the Lewellen Evans Award in 2008 for outstanding achievement in astronomy and dedicated service to the society. Dr. Caldwell also built a Glasair experimental airplane which was his pride and joy. He was a member of the Privateer Yacht Club, the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
